Magnesium is a mineral necessary for maintaining good health – it is needed by the heart, nerves and muscles. It participates in the activation of more than 300 enzymes, which enable the normal course of metabolic processes in the body. Since our body is not able to produce magnesium on its own, it is necessary to take it regularly through food.
Daily requirements for magnesium intake in adults and children over 12 are from 300 to 400 mg (recommended by the German Nutrition Association). The use of magnesium-poor foods, a monotonous diet, stress, sports activities accompanied by increased sweating and strenuous physical exertion, excessive alcohol consumption or chronic diseases in old age (eg. diabetes) can lead to a magnesium deficiency in the body.
A magnesium deficiency is manifested by an increased tendency for stress, a reduced ability to withstand loads and weaker immune system.
